Gas in Montreal most expensive in North America Posted on 12/8/2014 4:14:00 AM by Michel Boyer To motorists this may not come as a huge surprise. Last Wednesday, drivers in Quebec were paying about $1.20 per litre of gas in the province, while Albertans were paying $0.98 and Texans $0.76, according to the Journal de Montreal. The cause is mostly because of high taxes, according to an economist with Desjardins. The situation isn’t new, but it has been getting worse because of the province’s decision to increase taxes in order to curb the deficit. Taxes make up about 39 per cent of the cost of gas in Montreal versus 32 per cent in Moncton and 24 per cent in Calgary. Last week, Quebec Finance Minister Carlos Leitao announced gas producers will have to pay a new tax, which is expected to translate to an additional two cents per litre. How did Montreal gas prices on December 2nd compare to other cities: City $ CAD cost per litre St. Louis, Missouri 0.72 Miami, Florida 0.85 New York, New York 0.97 Calgary, Alberta 0.99 Toronto, Ontario 1.12 Vancouver, British-Columbia 1.18 Montreal, Quebec 1.25
