Gas is now flowing through the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant, the Director of Operations of the Ghana National Gas Corporation, Dr Ben Asante has revealed. Dr Asante said at 2pm Monday, November 10, 2014 pigs – devices used to clean and inspect leakages in oil and gas pipelines – started flowing through the lines. “This is the day we should all be celebrating,” Dr Asante told Accra-based Joy FM. “First spec of gas is now coming.” “As at 2pm I was there to inspect the arrival of pigs to clean the pipelines. When the pig arrives it tells you that on the arrival of the last pig that you have gas,” he added. He answered in the affirmative when asked if that means the Plant is now producing gas. Earlier, the Energy Commission asked for suspension of any flow of gas because safety concerns have not been addressed. In a letter addressed to the management of GNGC, the Energy Commission noted that it has, through its Independent Technical Auditor, observed the company was still doing welding works and has discharged pieces of pipe works and other metals that indicate that construction works is not yet done. The statement advised the management to withhold plans of flowing gas until the issues raised are effectively addressed. But Dr Asante said they have not flouted any safety concerns because GNGC “has duly completed installation” Friday and ongoing works are meant for future phases of the entire project. He said the company has responded to the Commission’s letter and taken officials including the Energy Minister to the site to inspect the project. Source: Ghana/StarrFMonline/103.5FM
