Gaua Island is part of the Vanuatu Archipelago, a group of volcanic island in the South Pacific Ocean. The island is the exposed upper cone and summit of a stratovolcano that’s 3,000 m high and 40 km in diameter. Most of the volcano is submerged beneath the ocean, but it’s still active. This image was taken from the International Space Station on May 2013 and it shows a steam plume coming up from Mount Gharat, the highest peak on the island.
