Gautam Deb visits woman whom he allegedly assaulted Siliguri, 15 October: North Bengal development minister Gautam Deb today met the local leader of the All India Democratic Womans Association, the womens wing of the CPI-M, Gauri Mitra, who has been admitted to a Siliguri-based private nursing home following a cerebral attack. Mrs Mitra and two other persons had lodged complaints against Mr Deb after he allegedly assaulted them as they protested plans to build an electric crematorium at Ramghat under ward 5 in Siliguri on 28 September. As a common citizen, I came to visit her after I received reports of her illness. I could not talk to her as she was sleeping, but I talked to the doctors and they said she was improving. If they need any help I can help them, Mr Deb told reporters at the nursing home. He, however, avoided questions over whether the issue had already became political. Asked about the Congress meeting with Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi on this issue, Mr Deb said they could very well meet the Governor. I have nothing to say on this, he said. A Congress delegation today met the state Governor over the issue in Darjeeling. Former state urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya, however, said he has doubts on whether Mr Deb went to see Mrs Mitra as a mere “show” or spontaneously. The minister who himself assaulted her is now visiting her in hospital. It is good that he visited her, but I have I have qualms about his intentions. It seems that he went there to avoid crticisms. In my opinion, Mr Deb should have apologised for what he did or should have held discussions with the local people over the construction of the crematorium, Mr Bhattacharya said. Garbage irks minister: North Bengal development minister Gautam Deb on Wednesday expressed annoyance when he spotted garbage and an open septic tank at the Siliguri District Hospital premises. Mr Deb later said there should be a different car parking arrangement for hospital doctors and fee parking system for the general public there. State wants to keep enviroment free of pollution, says Deb: The state Environment Department has decided to set up its branch office in Darjeeling Hills, the north Bengal development minister said on Wednesday. Mr Deb said the state wants to keep the environment pollution free and ban the rampant use of plastics. Deb does meditation: North Bengal development minister Gautam Deb has taken up the ‘meditation exercise’ so that he can concentrate on his job. “I have started practicing meditation to concentrate on my development work for north Bengal. I will not look into petty and nasty political issues,” Mr Deb told reporters on Wednesday. sns
