The LGBT who met over the weekend at Molo and partied at a Nakuru hotel complained that the government has denied them their freedom of association. Speaking to journalists, an LGBT member who wished to remain anonymous said that they needed their rights too as other people. “We plead with the government to legitimize our organization in accordance with the concern of our people”, he said. The National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission’s (NGLHRC) application to register was denied in 2013 because the Non-Governmental Organizations Coordination Board deemed the group’s name “unacceptable”. James Muoki Mugo from Family Health Option Kenya, Nakuru branch said that it is time the government recognizes that we have LGBT members in our community. “If the government can admit that out of ten people three are not straight this would help reduce some diseases and infections, added Mugo. “The National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission seek to carry out basic human rights work, such as standing up for LGBT people who have been victims of violence,” said Eric Gitari, executive director of NGLHRC. “To deny the NGLHRC the right to register is to deny them the chance to carry out this important work and violates the rights to freedom of association and non-discrimination enshrined in Kenya’s Constitution.” added Gitari. The director claimed most Nakuru men are in the cult in a hidden way as is depicted during night clubs raves and evening activities. The couples tend to club together in town and along the streets. “The refusal to grant legal status to an organization, on arbitrary and discriminatory grounds, violates Kenya’s international obligations,” said Monica Tabengwa, LGBT rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Kenyan authorities should stop fighting this cause and register the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission.”
