Geez I love how greeny ecoterrorists over represent themselves on social media and in doing so, trick themselves into believing they represent the attitudes of the majority of society. Just because you dont see people take to Facebook in their thousands, celebrating the fact that drum lines are being set at popular beaches, doesnt mean that a lot of us arent quietly ok with it. Its just human nature to make more noise about something youre unhappy about. The saying quietly content springs to mind... If sharks had computers however, Im pretty sure the landscape of social media debate would be quite different... Maybe then youd see a bit of a backlash from those of us that actually take offence to them killing us. OK, so there was a bit of a protest down at cott the other day and a lot of people turned up. Some big numbers. 4000 in fact. Like I said, big numbers. Perths population is approximately 1.75 million. So thats 0.23%. I believe theres also a petition going around that has 8000 signatures, or 0.32% of WAs population of 2.5 million. But hold on, wasnt there an online poll by the West Australian that showed the vast majority of respondents were against the cull? -at this point Ill just point out that the term cull is a misnomer, as culling refers to reducing a population, whereas drum lining is designed purely to remove an imminent threat- Lets just establish for a minute, what represents a respondent in this case... Given that these polls appear at the bottom of online articles on that same topic, a respondent is someone who has chosen to open the link to the article, either having seen the headline or searched for it (predisposition) and then been emotionally motivated enough to respond to the poll - which gets back to the whole human nature of complaining thing. So no, polls of this nature are not a reliable means of gauging public sentiment, however they do provide the West Australian with subject matter for another misleading article, which the tree huggers no doubt lapped up beautifully. None of this gives these dickheads a mandate to remove bait from drum lines and as for the geniuses that felt so strongly about this moral injustice to the sharks that they chose to issue death threats to fishing contractors and the premier etc - I could talk about logic, hypocrisy and irony - but really, that just speaks for itself. While Im on it, the argument that statistically we have a far greater chance of being killed in a car crash, or by cigarettes, suicide, domestic violence or obesity, than by sharks - so therefore sharks dont pose any great threat - is completely irrelevant, illogical and ridiculous. I wouldnt worry too much about putting on a seat belt, Johnny - its not car accidents you have to worry about - breast cancer is statistically a much greater threat. Yep, thats what you need to be worrying about
