General Nutrition Guidelines Caution: If you have heartburn or other stomach conditions or sensitivities to any of the foods below, please do not eat them, and substitute with other healthy alternatives. Drink two (2) glasses of water prior to each meal and one (1) glass of water in between meals. Always try to use whole grain, cracked or sprouted oat or rye, i.e. quinoa, barley etc. Stay away from whole wheat or multi-grain. Always use dark leafy greens, not iceberg lettuce. Spring mix is best, but romaine is also good. Always try to use fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, herring, Alaskan Halibut, mackerel, or flounder. Get wild-caught versus farm raised. Try to get organic when possible. Beverages: A healthy substitute for soda is sparkling water with a small amount of juice, an herbal tea bag, or natural flavorings at a health food store Herbal Tea (using tea bags, not Arizona Tea): Drink at your preferable temperature (better at warm temperatures for digestion). Hot or Cold Cocoa (using dark chocolate at least 70% Cacao). Fruit Smoothie (use REAL fruit). Make your own or purchase at a shop that uses REAL fruit. Filtered Water is the best (remember we are 70% water). You can add real fruit or a small amount of real fruit juice or herbal tea to the water for flavor, or use seltzer water. Green drink with spirulina or wheatgrass (does contain wheat). For sweetener try stevia, xylitol, truvia, or agave nectar. A Simple Green Smoothie: Nutrient dense drink that can add energy to your day. I recommend this in the morning. 1 cup frozen mango (or frozen fruit of choice) 1 cup kale (remove stalk) 1 cup water Mix together in blender Yields approximately 1 quart Seasonings: Use herbs freely, i.e. tumeric, oregano, basil, dill, rosemary, Mrs. Dash, parsley. Limit salt and sugar. Use real sea salt (Himalayan or Celtic). Fruit/Vegetable: You can use frozen fruits and vegetables if pressed for time, but fresh is always best. Get organic if possible especially for non-peeled items. Snack/dessert: Try decadent & guilt free bananas: Mash bananas and freeze Can add chocolate almond milk and crushed almonds/walnuts to the mashed bananas and freeze Good Sources of Recipes: tracker.diabetes.org/recipe/ thecookingcardiologist/recipes drweil/drw/ecs/common/recipe.html allrecipes/recipes/healthy-recipes/quick-and-easy/
