General Pio del Pilar is described as “short, dark complexion, short-cropped hair, regular nose, mouth and eyebrows, slight beard, fifty to sixty years of age.” Born on July 11, 1865 in Culi-culi, San Pedro de Macati (now Makati City), Pío Isidro y Castañeda joined the Katipunan in May, 1896 and formed a chapter called Matagumpay (Triumphant). To protect his family from harassment or retribution from Spanish authorities, he changed his last name to del Pilar. By January 1899, del Pilar was appointed chief of the Second Zone of Manila by General Antonio Luna. He faced his first arrest when captured on June 9, 1900 at San Miguel de Mayumo in Bulacan, but was two weeks later as part of an amnesty after taking an oath of allegiance to the United States. His work in support of the revolution continued, and as result, he was deported on January 16, 1901 to Guam, along with Apolinario Mabini, General Maximo Hizon, General Artemio Ricarte, the commander at Baler who is profiled in The Devil’s Causeway, Lieutenant Colonel Simon Tecson, and a number of others. After agreeing to re-take the oath of allegiance to the United States, and this time adhere to it, del Pilar was allowed to return to the Philippines in February 1903. He died on June 21, 1931, at the age of 65.
