Gentrification, which is formed from the word “gentry” (the nobility or elite in traditional France), occurs when a residential area is targeted for removal and replacement of its less organized, less powerful group by members of the more powerful group, especially the elite. Regentrification refers to the scenario in which the invading group is returning to a territory they previously occupied. Technically, they are trying to reclaim territory they only temporarily abandoned. Our familiarity with regentrification is a result of the recent efforts of Europeans to forcefully (which does not always entail violence, just options which cannot be refused) displace Afrikan residents from their generations old urban housing stock in Chicago, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and so many other cities and claim this confiscated territory for themselves. Once there, they enact physical barriers (in the form of buildings, circuitous travelways, police, kwk) and laws (as in all forms of exorbitant taxes and unreasonable housing codes) that prevent any substantial return of these residents to the areas and housing these residents formerly occupied.
