Geoeffective Sunspot 2158 produced a strong solar flare this afternoon (Sept. 10) measuring X1.6 at 17:45 UTC. The event was associated with a Type II radio emission with an impressive estimated velocity of 3750 km/s. Coronagraph imagery shows a full halo coronal mass ejection (CME) that is Earth directed. Proton levels are on the rise and a radiation storm is possible. Minor to major geomagnetic storming will be possible once the plasma cloud arrives, possibly as early as Friday. More to follow.
