Geoff Thompson, writer of this film, has an interesting story. I first became aware of Geoff Thompson about ten years ago for his book on self defense theory, Dead or Alive: Your Choice, written from his experience working as a doorman in English clubs and later interviewing both law enforcement and convicted violent offenders to gain insights into the psychological aspects of conflict and violent crime. More recently, Thompson has guested on London Real multiple times and detailed a transition in his own mind and life. Loosely quoted, he said that studying violence and looking for violence seemed to attract violence. Today, Thompson speaks as a man at peace, making efforts to find a more peaceful and optimistic view toward his fellow human beings. At its core, this film is an extended monologue of a boxer recording life lessons and stories to pass on to his son. The great performance and gorgeous black and white cinematography are enough to get my attention, but knowing that the story comes from the mind of Geoff Thompson, with his storied past and current transition, I am honestly thrilled to see this film.
