Geography Question: [For my Brain Bowl students, but anyone can answer] “Cleopatra’s Needle” is a popular name for three ancient Egyptian obelisks that were moved from Egypt and re-erected in three major world cities during the 19th-century. Although named for Queen Cleopatra VII, none of the three have any actual connection to her, all being at least 1,000-years older than she and her reign. Yesterday, we did a question on the one in London, and today we’ll ask about another one. Today’s obelisk is a matching pair to the one in London (both are from Alexandria). It is made of Aswan red granite, is 68-feet high, weighs 224-tones and is inscribed with Egyptian hieroglyphs. It was moved there in 1880 and is located on Graywacke Knoll in Central Park, next to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Can you name the city in which this one is located? Dr. Dan.
