George Sukeji Morikami 1887-1976 Yamato Colony Born Japan 1887, immigrated to US in 1906 and became a naturalized US Citizen December 15, 1967 at 80 yrs old George came here to join the Yamato Colony in what became Boca Raton. Flaglers Model Land Company invited Morikami country men to establish a farm community and use Flaglers Florida East Coast Railroad to ship their produce. Between problems convincing Japanese to move here, depression and WWII, few members stayed. After the Pearl Harbor attack the US Army Air Corp seized 6, 000 acres, and tore down their houses to build a training base, which later became Boca Raton airport. Morikami had a guard at his house until the war was over. He stayed here after the war and became a successful farmer. The only thing left of the colony is a road Yamato Rd.
