Georgia has a weird phenomenon that I never saw in any other state where I lived or worked as a reporter: Parents not getting their kids to school on the first day or week. Part of it is that schools here go back so early. Also, there are various starting dates in metro Atlanta so parents apparently get confused. When I grew up, everyone went back the Wednesday after Labor Day. Systems here have been going back since Aug. 1 with several major systems resuming classes today. ajc/weblogs/get-schooled/2013/aug/12/back-school-most-kids-where-are-rest/
