Gervase Elwes (1866-1921) was an English Tenor who had s significant impact on English singing technique in the early 20th century. A favorite of Elgars he was most associated with the roles of Gerontius and the Evangelist in the St Matthew Passion. He also gave the first performances of songs by Vaughan Williams and Roger Quilter both of whom wrote with his voice in mind. He died in a tragic railway accident while on tour at the height of his fame.
