Get a Jump on Moving Day! Moving can be extremely strenuous, especially for students who are dealing with exams or are far from home with no family to help. Here is a list of great tips that you can begin prior to your move so when the day finally comes you can breeze through it and kick back with a cold drink by mid-afternoon. 1. De-clutter: Sort through your belongings and start getting rid of clutter. You can organize these items and decide to have a yard sale when the weather warms up to make some extra money or donate them to a local charity. 2. Get Organized: Make a list of people and businesses you deal with that will need to be notified of your change of address, such as your bank, doctor, magazine subscriptions etc. You can also get a change of address form from the post office. 3. Cancel Services: Make a list of services that you need to cancel, such as utilities, telephone, cable and internet, etc. Don’t forget to set up a new account for these services at your new address. 4. Book Your Truck Early: As you know Kingston has a large turn-over of students at the end of April and beginning of May, so booking your moving truck or hiring a moving company early is key. Avoid waiting until the last minute so you don’t have to scramble! 5. Make Appropriate Accommodations: Most tenants will be moving out on the last day of the month and will not have access to their new home until the following day when their lease begins. Make sure you have booked your truck for both days and that you have a place to stay overnight. If you can stay with family or friends to save money than that is great, but if you need to stay in a hotel ensure you have put money aside for this expense and that you book your room in advance. Just like the moving trucks, the hotel rooms get booked quickly. 6. Pack Early: If you can, start packing items that you don’t use on a regular basis. This will save you a lot of time. Don’t forget to label boxes properly in case you need to retrieve something you packed early and to make it easier to un-pack at your new home. 7. Cleaning Kit: As with every end of tenancy you are expected to leave the property in move-in condition for the next tenant. Ensure you have the appropriate supplies handy for a thorough cleaning. As always there are things you can do in advance so you don’t need to worry about these on moving day, as you’ll have enough to do then. Please contact us for a checklist of what needs to be done before you move. 8. Keep the Essentials: Packing a separate box that contains items you may need for your first night in your new home is always a good idea. Who likes searching through countless boxes to find several items after a long day of moving? Here’s a great list to start with and add to: □ Bedding and linens □ Change of clothes □ Toilet paper & toiletries (soap, shampoo, razor, etc.) □ Shower curtain and towels □ Medications, aspirin or pain reliever □ Alarm clock □ Snacks □ Coffee maker or instant coffee and tea □ Disposable plates, cups, and eating utensils □ First-aid kit □ Basic cleaning supplies and paper towels □ Scissors, box cutter and tools (screwdrivers, hammer, etc.) □ Flashlights □ Garbage bags □ Light bulbs □ Extension cords and batteries □ If you have pets, dont forget about their needs Moving can be easy if you are prepared and these steps can help with the transition from property to property.
