Get local government to improve your community - Hold them accountable Often in dealings with local government, communities feel like their opinions and needs are ignored. But that’s not how it’s supposed to be. It is the job of your local government to provide basic services and make sure that your community’s needs are met. Each member of the community should have access to basic services like water and electricity. Local government is supposed to encourage the involvement of the community. They can achieve this by allowing and promoting community participation in decision-making. It is also their job to respect, protect, promote and fulfil human rights. You should report your municipality to the provincial department responsible for local government if they do not provide basic services. If the provincial government finds that the municipality cannot fulfil its obligations it can impose a recovery plan. This includes assessing the problem, identifying strategies to deal with it, and setting out a time frame for the solving of the problem. If the municipality refuses to accept the plan, or if it cannot implement the plan, the provincial government can dissolve the municipal council.
