Get ready for the Apple moth invasion. Codling moths (or the apple - TopicsExpress

Get ready for the Apple moth invasion. Codling moths (or the apple worms as I commonly hear them called) will be coming out of the soil to copulate and lay their eggs in the centre of the apple flowers. The flowers are about to open in the next couple of weeks. At this time the temperatures warm up triggering the moths to emerge from the soil, or mulch, or old apples, or other crevices around the tree. They live and die within 50m of your apple trees, often becoming great, great grandparents before summer is through. If you do nothing to control the moth the populations will build around your tree until every single apple has a moth in it. Now you may appreciate the extra protein, but this year we can finally offer a low toxic spray made from super charge soil bacteria to effect the grubs. For compete spraying instructions come into the nursery for some great advice. • Codling moth larva leaving a damaged apple. Photo: Peter Witzgall
