Getting rid of old corrupted tribal Governments When the people - TopicsExpress

Getting rid of old corrupted tribal Governments When the people in Canada lose confidence in their government they call for a vote of confidence. If the vote shows that the people have lost confidence in their government elections are called for and a new government is put in place. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works in Indian Country. It took a determined group of tribal citizens to do it in Mt. Pleasant. They held elections and they elected a new government and they replaced their old government with it. The old board held onto their high paying positions to the last minute, but they finally stepped down when the new board simply stepped in and took control. It took the courageous actions of group of tribal citizens in L’Anse Michigan to get rid of their old board. They organized and took control of and held onto the tribe’s administration building. They occupied it for several months before their situation was resolved in their favor. Unfortunately, a corrupt government that no longer rules lawfully and that doesn’t genuinely represent its people anymore and, that has lost all legitimacy with them, is much harder to get rid of in Indian County than is the case in Canada. It’s been done all across Indian Country…but it has always depended upon the courageous actions of a tribe’s citizen warriors. Thank you, Charles Forgrave
