Ghana Lesson # 10. If you are called Fat in Ghana… it’s a good thing…?!?! So… many of us are aware that the older generation of African’s are amazing people, but lack the quality of “tact”. They have none. No tact at all. If you happen to have put on even a gram of weight since you were last seen by them, you will receive the welcome of “Aye Diana how are you? You have grown fat oooo”. Yes they will tell you, to your face, that you are fat. Be it uncle, auntie, cousin, distant relative, anoyone. When I was younger I used to get soooo offended. “ Don’t they realise this can make a girl (not me, but a girl) anorexic? Don’t they realise they are damaging our self-esteem?” No they don’t. and even years later…. it still happens. Even people who don’t really know you will tell you of your body shape, size and BMI, just in case you didn’t realise yourself when you looked in the mirror. “Wow you have ‘put on’ oooo” “Aye what are you eating?…. You have becoming big. First you were slim, now, wooooowwww” LOL they don’t care. They will just say it. And 8 times out of 10, the person saying it isnt exactly Slim Shady themselves! they will be some overweight hotmess and will be telling YOU youre big lol. I. Just. Cant. I was once told I shouldn’t get offended but it just means that I must be living well… so Fat means you live well? What if it’s a genetic thing passed onto me by Lance and Deci that I can’t help? Lol. I had an egg sandwich for dinner last night – I’m not living royally! So the good news is that since coming to Ghana I have actually lost 1 Stone 4lbs. I’ve lost weight! I’m so happy my clothes are little loose, I can actually tell I’ve trimmed down a bit (its due to the ‘rice diet’ I’m on – I just eat rice at work every day because I don’t like many of the local dishes – and now I hate rice - yes terrible I know) So how comes last week I was told I have “become big”? LOL hooowwwww??? I mean I’m not saying I’m skinny, I’m far from it, but how could I have lost a stone+ over the space of 3 months and then I’m told I have become big? So if I’m big now, what was I before? Enormous? Lol I want to give up, but I won’t. Can’t stop… won’t stop… lol. I have come to learn that I will be told this approx 2-4 times a month. Im starting to keep count now hehe. So the lesson here is that when in Ghana you are told your are fat, it’s actually a compliment (?!?!?) Don’t get offended. Apparently it means you eat well and therefore you must have money. I’d hate to think what is thought of people who are skinny and have money lol. Ghana continues to make me smile, even through the rain! Carry on Thursday, Carry on!
