Gifts come in so many ways. Sometimes a gift is more than physical item, its a message. Perhaps,its even deeper than a message, its an answer. A gift was given years ago of a statue of an African-American woman, who initially was thought to be a teacher. But as this gift was being dusted off her name was engraved on the side: Edmonia Lewis. Who was Edmonia Lewis? Unfortunately, the gift giver was an elder, who has since transition. So going back to the gift-giver wasnt possible. Still, as we know spirit lives. That spirit revealed that Edmonia Lewis, born in 1844 was the first successful African-American sculptor. Despite, being orphaned, her lack of formal training, and being brutally beaten by a mob, she followed her path, her dharma to create works which include Forever Free. In reflecting, the question arose what are we doing with our life? Are we on our path or someone elses? The answer is that we, too have within us the power to sculptor a new life. The choice is ours.
