Gino Camilleri – (1950 – 2014) It is with deepest sympathy and with a heavy heart that we inform all Exiles members and all the Sports community particularly the Waterpolo family, of the demise of Gino Camilleri; Founder member and President of the Exiles Sports Club in 1967. Gino, as we all know him was successful in his Sporting activities and involvements and was proud of where the Exiles Sports Club has now got to; his success in Sports is reflected also in his career as a Lawyer, Magistrate and the Judge. MR JUSTICE GINO CAMILLERI Son of the late Lewis Camilleri and of the late Teodora nèe Bruno, Giacinto (know as Gino) Camilleri was born in Valletta on the 6th June 1950. After receiving his primary education at St Catherine’s School in Sliema and his secondary education at St Aloysius College in Birkirkara, he joined the Royal University of Malta in October 1968, where he read law between 1968 and 1973. He obtained the Diploma of Notary Public in 1972 and graduated Doctor of Laws in November 1973. Dr Camilleri received his warrant in January 1974 and set up a law firm together with his friend and colleague Dr Philip Galea. Together they practised in all areas of litigation. In 1976 Dr. Camilleri became a partner in the law firm Farrugia, Gatt & Falzon. In 1983 Gino Camilleri was appointed Magistrate, and sat in the Court of Magistrates in both Malta and Gozo, dealing with both criminal and civil cases. He also presided over the Rent Regulation Board, the Land Arbitration Board and the Rural Leases Control Board. In 1995 Magistrate Camilleri was appointed Judge of the Superior Courts and has since been ordinarily sitting in the First Hall of the Civil Court. He has also dealt with criminal cases in the Criminal Court and in the Court of Criminal Appeal and is currently the Judge ordinarily sitting in the Voluntary Jurisdiction Section of the Civil Court. More recently he has been assigned by the Chief Justice to deal with sales by licitation. In his university days Gino Camilleri was a member of the Student Representative Council, and a member of the University Sports Club. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Youth Movement of the Nationalist Party of Malta. He was also involved in various sporting activities. He was founder and President of the Exiles Sports Club (Sliema) Malta, President of the Amateur Swimming Association of Malta and President of the Squash Association of Malta, and President of the Volleyball Association of Malta. He was also for a time President of the Malta Olympic Committee and formed part of various international committees, including the Legal Commission of the Olympic Committees of Europe, and was Chairman of the Advisory Committee for Integration of Disabled Athletes in the Commonwealth Games. In 2003 Judge Camilleri became a member of the European Forum of Judges for the Environment. He is married to Patricia, nee’ Boland, and has two sons, Michael and Adrian, who are both advocates.
