Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!! Post Patricia Belen Thank you Fe for sharing. As you know I had a mild stroke in August of 2011. It was a wake up call. I made a big U-turn and changed my lifestyle. No more processed foods or junk snacks. Everything is fresh no canned foods and in less than 2 yr(2011 to 2013) my cholesterol turn excellent and from size 16 to size 4 at present. Im so glad I changed. It wasnt easy in the beginning. I did it gradually and consistently. Perseverance was the key. Up to this day I have been sharing how and what I did to make it to where I am health wise . Like · 1,121 · Reply · 28 July 30 replies Guy Odom Jr I had a heart attack about a month ago. I was on the road coming back from a job in Tucker. It hit me coming through Canton. I pulled into Fire Station 13 and they immediately diagnosed, stopped, and restarted my heart , got me back in rhythm, transported me to cardiac unit. Before they restarted my heartit was hitting about 250bpm, chest felt like it was gonna cave in, couldnt get my breath. When the pain moved to my jaw is when I pulled into the station. Firefighters are amazing ! BTW no damage to my heart. Lucky, lucky, lucky ! I survived by coughing and sleeping on the floor on my right side, and did deep breathing. Do not panic. Also be determined and courageous. I was sweating and completely drenched and had to get down on my own, about 50 feet to level ground and wait for a three wheeler to come, stretched on the floor with sheer determination, and got medical care after two and a half hours and I am still convalescing, and meditating. Most people dont pass out when they have one and only 1.3 of people have irregular heart beats (this scenario described ventricular tachycardia only-they do pass out and without cardioversion (paddles) breathing wont get them out of it. Rarely the bald alba maneuver (bearing down as if having a bowel movement can break v tach). Take a 325 mg aspirin and ca 911. As a critical care nurse for years in CCU and now as a Family Practitioner I urge u to look at the American Heart Association site for proper guidance. The first 30i minutes are most imperative - to get into the heart cath lab for survival . We do not just sit there and pray while watching someone die of a heart attack . we get them to the ER. We do what we can until we get there. We pray because we have a God who is all powerful and who loves like no other. He guides the doctors hands. He guides our hands . but human hands can only do so much. Our God may choose to bring us home to live with him and we will die , but our all powerful God may also have it in his plan to have us live and do more on this earth. Our beliefs will not get us killed . we live a full and real life because of him. And even if we die, it just means we live with him! For a person that is having a heart attack time is muscle. Call 911 or have someone take you to the nearest hospital. Save your oxygen by saving your energy. You dont want to put more stress into that failing heart. Heart attack could be fatal if no intervention is done within few minutes after onset of symptoms. It was Christmas morning and I woke up at about 3AM with a tightness in my chest. I knew that it probably was a heart attack. I went back to sleep and finally woke my wife up at 5:00AM. She wanted to call an ambulance but I said no and asked her to drive me the 8 miles to the hospital. Its 55MPH most of the way. While she was getting ready I made my bed, shaved, brushed my teeth, etc. I couldnt have been more stupid that morning. I guess God didnt want me yet because I was just asking to see what the other side is like. Next time Ill behave. If, however, you were to attempt cough CPR at the wrong time (because you misjudged the kind of cardiac event being experienced) or went about it in the wrong way, it could make matters worse. Cough CPR is not a new procedure — it has been around for years and has been used successfully in isolated emergency cases where victims realized they were on the verge of fainting and about to go into full cardiac arrest (their hearts were about to stop) and knew exactly how to cough so as to keep enough oxygen-enriched blood circulating to prevent them from losing consciousness until help could be sought, or they were under the direct care of physicians who recognized the crises as they were taking place and wer Read more at snopes/medical/homecure/coughcpr.asp#G3xht4I0S0SriSxO.99 snopes: Cough CPR snopes Like · 138 · Reply · 1 August 10 replies Arnulfo Fuentes If the Lord takes our life anytime, no one can stop it. This post seems to suggest an alternative to CPR in the way it talks about squeezing n expanding the chest to push air into lungs n force blood out of heart. Heart attack is a generic term that encompasses events like Myocardial Infarction, Arrhythmia, Cardiac Arrest etc. The best thing to do is : 1. Call someone if ur alone 2. Chew on Aspirin (always carry few tablets if ur over 45yrs) 3. Try to stay still n relax by slow deep breathing 4. If u feel dizzy, lie down n raise ur feet onto some chair The best hope is for any Myocardial Infaction patient is that he/she reaches Cardiac care unit within 1st hour. For Arrhythmia n Cardiac Arrest every second counts Edited · Like · 49 · Reply · Friday at 10:44 AM Cheryl Biggley Nigh It is wonderful that this information is being shared to others about heart attacks...This information posted relates to men only, what about women who have heart attacks...let me share my story with u It will b 2 weeks tomorrow that I had a heart attack...those who know me and see me would never believe that it could happen to me but, it did My morning started off good and I was fine....it was close to noon and I started sweating, and not knowing, I thought, OK, its just menopause but, all of a sudden my hands became numb and before I knew it my arms became heavy, still not sure what was going g on I laid on my bed in front of a fan...that didnt help and I felt sick to my stomach....I managed to get myself to the bathroom and just laid on the floor still not knowing what was going on....again I somehow got myself up off the floor only to make it to the living room and back on the floor...My hands and arms felt so heavy and by this time I couldnt move or even lift my arms...I sent a text to my sister and within minutes help was on its way and at my place...within a short time of getting to the hospital, I had a heart attack, and not just a heart attack but one that was rare and only a few survive..we as woman need to b made aware of our symptoms as they r very different from those of men.... He woke up with jaw lPain tightness in his chest, our hospital was across the road from where we lived, thank god, as doctors said nothing but the medical care and shocking his heart would have saved him. He went on to have several more incidents including tachycardia, he had triple bypass at age 39. They found only one artery could be saved thank god it was the major artery. He done everything he was told to do, from excercise to diet, although his doctor believed in everything in moderation. My husband is now 75 and healthy, swims every day walks 45 minutes every day. Like · 29 · Reply · 21 August at 04:49 AM Dominik Windholz I am a paramedic. This is how you kill yourself. 1) When you suffer from heart attack it takes several minutes until it kills you, when you DO the things stated here or things similar to this. Usually most people have half an hour until it would get lethal and that is enough time to call an ambulance for the meds you need. It is not like stumbling and you are instantly dead. Most people can even feel it a day before the main attack because they have pain in their left chest or arm. 2) You MUST NOT move yourself in case of an heart attack. The more you move, the more your heart needs to pump blood into your body. The pumping of air with your lungs is EXACTLY the opposite thing. Sit down. Lay back as far as the pain allows. Do nothing. Dont panic. Dont freak out. Wait for the ambulance to drive you into the hospital. The more you move, the more you kill yourself. After a few minutes the emergency doctor will give you meds that counter the attack, and after an examination of your body you can usually go home after two days or so. Like · 25 · Reply · 9 August Eddie Emmanuel So many issues with this: 1) The article obviously refers to a Cardiac Arrest (heart stopping), not a Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction), in which heart muscle dies through lack of blood. 2) Anyone who has ever attempted to resuscitate a person who has a Cardiac Arrest knows you need to press down and compress the chest by 1/3rd - 1/2 of its antero-posterior diameter to be effective. Coughing simply wont do this. 3) Since the brain has no independent store of Oxygen or Glucose, if your heart stops, loss of consciousness is almost instantaneous. 4) With all that coughing, who is going to call for the emergency services? Do NOT try driving yourself to the hospital and do not strain the heart by repetitive coughing. The body needs to conserve all available oxygen for the heart. Coughing like this could increase the demand on the heart. And, it will not work to stop a lethal rhythm. Only an AED (electricity) and prompt medical treatment will. Like · 21 · Reply · 10 August Matilda Heming This is totally inaccurate. The valsalver manoeuvre (coughing and deep breathing) only works for certain arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats.) A heart attack occurs when blood supply is cut off to a part of the heart due to a blockage in an artery. The tissue being supplied by that artery dies, causing the heart attack. Like · 20 · Reply · 13 August Kelly Rawllins Um think maybe you should mention aspirin and calling 911. This doesnt stop a heart attack this stops hypoperfusion to the brain leading to syncope. Suddem cardiac death is sudden. In that 10 seconds youre thoughts are my chest hurts, then it stops beating. Youre best bet is to dial 911. A silent 911 call will get at least PD to your house.
