Folds up over Arca Swiss PO ball (60mm). Can get camera on the ground without ground set by using reversible leg position -- essentially tripod can do splits. Rubber g-locks touch ball head in collapsed position, so no worries about rubs. I dont have heavy camera or lens and will use with center column extended (I am 59"), and havent tested in wind yet.Legs unlock and lock with ease and precision. One barely has to snug them and they lock in place. All four segments can be released at the same time making setup really fast. Fit and finish is superb. I use an Acratech GP Ball head which is a very good fit for this tripod but doesnt quite let the legs close completely. This has not proved to be a problem as I only fold the legs over the head when packing for flights and need the shortest possible length. The only negative found is that the tip covers on the legs will slip occasionally on hardwood floors. This is more of minor annoyance than a problem. My old tripod was the Manfrotto 190 CX PRO B which costs less than half as much and worked very well. The Gitzo weighs about a pound less and was definitely worth the upgrade. The old saw about the best tripod is the one you have with you is true and with the 1544t at 3.1 lbs with head, you will have no reason not to have it with you. If you are not using heavy long glass, you may never need a heavier tripod. I have found it effective for everything up to 70-300 f/4.5-5.6VR on D600. More info at bit.ly/1l7XmEM.
