Given that the book is covering such a sensitive plot of the Arab-Israeli / Muslim-Jew relationship spanning a good 50 years period (1950s - 2010) and is based predominantly in the occupied part of Palestine - The Almond Tree lacks serious emotions the plot line deserved. The main characters - from Baba, Ahmed, Abbas, Mama, Yasmin to Nora - are too one-dimensional and just lacking human shades. The story that starts off really strongly (with the Amals death scene) goes too predictably - all the bad stuff keeps happening to the Hamid family, while Ahmeds life reaches professional epitome way too smoothly!! For a debut writer Michelle Cohen Corasanti has a very confident and engaging writing style, yet her pacing and language is very simple and makes the 350 page book a very easy read!! Nonetheless book is overhyped and overrated in my eyes - as it just lacks the emotional depth the story needed!
