"Given this, can we seriously consider ending our "dependence on oil", as some would suggest? Someone who wants to stop using oil will have to say goodbye to smart phones, ballpoint pens, candlelight, clothing made of synthetic fibers, glasses, toothpaste, tires (including those on bicycles), and thousands of other products made from plastic, a petroleum derivative." This kind of thinking is the problem! People who are pushing for green reusable technology do not want to stop using petrol product imminently; but to look to the future and manage the finite petrol resources better. We do not need to get these resources out of the ground at break neck speed killing the planet in the mean time. We will need oil for things other than energy. ie plastics etc...But there are many ways to make energy and one of the main problems is renewable energy does not get substantial subsidies while the oil industry get many subsidies and tax breaks.
