Giving In Return One of the ways that we express our gratitude to those who have given us gifts is to give a gift in return. Return gifts can say a lot about how much we appreciate the individual who showed us a kindness. We sing a spiritual song that approaches this subject from the perspective of Christ. The song says, “I gave My life for thee, What hast thou giv’n to me?” If we are the beneficia¬ries of the greatest gift that man has ever received, then how are we expressing our gratitude for that gift? When Paul was encouraging the Corinthians to give financially to the Lord’s word, he used the Lord’s gift as a motivation for their giving in return. He wrote, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich” (2 Cor. 8:9). Jesus gave up equality with God in order to become a man and to assume the role of a servant. He personally received no benefit in doing that... it was all for us. And, of course, it resulted in His experiencing a very cruel death in our behalf. Paul was saying that we express our gratitude to the Lord for His gift, by the way we give in return. He concludes his discussion with the statement, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (2 Cor. 9:15). Are you grateful? Guy Orbison, Jr. Durango, CO
