Gizmo of the Week: Factor Trees Factoring is a key skill in mathematics and can help with tasks like simplify expressions, simplify fractions, and solving equations. Students can learn how to factor numbers in a very cool way using the Factor Trees Gizmo. The Gizmo allows students to start with any number up to 999. Students can then drag potential factors near the original composite number. If a factor is dragged near the number, a “branch” forms in the growing factor tree. This continues until the number is fully factored into its prime components. Students can also reverse the process and build numbers with prime factors in the Buildmode. Students will quickly learn that even though many different trees can be made from the same composite number, the prime factors are always the same. See how many different trees students can make!
