Gizmo of the Week: Relative Humidity It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity! We all know that sticky feeling as summer sets in and the humidity rises. But what is humidity, and how do you measure it? Students can use the Relative Humidity Gizmo to learn about humidity and find ways to measure relative humidity and dew point. Relative humidity is measured by comparing the temperatures shown on a dry-bulb thermometer and a wet-bulb thermometer that are shaken or exposed to a breeze. As water evaporates from the wet-bulb thermometer, its temperature decreases. The greater the difference, the lower the humidity and dew point. This is a great experiment to replicate outside your school. Just shake the wet-bulb thermometers instead of using a fan. Have fun!
