Glad this worked out. And this quote was nice from the generous Mr. Epstein. “That is the true meaning of life no matter what, if any, a person’s religious beliefs are. Caring and sharing. Thank you all that have helped support the YMCA’s summer camp program to help the most needy enjoy a brief respite from homelessness,” he added. 23 homeless children getting free camp, thanks to Bucks County donors Story Comments Print Create a hardcopy of this page Font Size: Default font size Larger font size Email to a friend Gene Epstein contributed contributed Gene Epstein Posted: Tuesday, June 25, 2013 9:45 am | Updated: 2:19 pm, Tue Jun 25, 2013. By DANNY ADLER Staff writer Posted on June 25, 2013 Daniel Adlerby Daniel Adler Bucks County responded. Thanks to generous donations from county residents, the Lower Bucks Family YMCA will cash in on a $2,500 challenge grant from Wrightstown philanthropists Gene and Marlene Epstein, officials said Monday, the last day of the challenge. Now, nearly two dozen homeless children living in the Bucks County Emergency Homeless Shelter in Bristol Township can attend YMCA summer camp for free. “The community has truly risen to the occasion and has donated well beyond our goal; the money raised will send 23 children to camp,” said Tom Swanciger, chief operating officer of the Lower Bucks Family YMCA. “These children normally would not have been able to experience camp, but thanks to the generosity of others, camp is now possible for these kids!” The Epsteins launched their challenge grant June 3; their foundation would contribute $2,500 to the YMCA’s Send a Kid to Camp promotion if new donors contributed at least $2,500. Originally proposed as a two-week challenge, the foundation extended the deadline one more week so the Y could collect the $900 that was still needed to meet the challenge. “The Gene and Marlene Epstein Humanitarian Fund is absolutely thrilled to see the community react to our family ‘challenge’ once again,” Gene Epstein said. “It is our goal in life to make things better simply because we were here. I believe that it is everyone’s desire, or should be, to help others less fortunate than us if we possibly can. “That is the true meaning of life no matter what, if any, a person’s religious beliefs are. Caring and sharing. Thank you all that have helped support the YMCA’s summer camp program to help the most needy enjoy a brief respite from homelessness,” he added. The YMCA is still accepting donations for the program, in the hopes of raising enough to help two more campers, raising to 25 the total number of homeless children going to camp, a YMCA spokeswoman said. Lower Bucks Family YMCA officials said that close to 1,000 school-age kids attend the YMCA’s summer camps each year. The Y offers partial scholarships to children of low-income families. The Y offers full scholarships to the kids living at the Bucks County Emergency Homeless Shelter. For more information, call the YMCA at 215-949-3400 or visit lbfymca.org.
