Glen Handley has let it be known that GBC have received a Parliamentary grant ( via the EU, I suspect) of £4.5 million to enhance their recycling of refuse. This was initiated by KCC, sing Whitstable as the guinea pig for the scheme. It was reported at the time that the rest of Kent would follow suit and it seems that Gravesham has been selected for the next tranche. It is possible to complete a survey, giving your views on how the council should proceed, But, and it is a big but, the options given do not include retaining the current method of sorting refuse ie clear sacks for recyclable, black sacks for landfill. So, you will have the choice of the type of bins to use. Gravesend will then have numerous ugly bins corroding every street. The council, of course, will claim, disingenuously, that by dint of the survey, they are giving the public what they want.. I hope that our GBC councillors will refuse to comply with what must surely be a directive from a higher authority, but that hope is a faint one. However, we should be grateful to Councillor Handley for demonstrating that common sense does sit in the council chambers. We must pray that he has some fellow travellers therein.
