Global News was trying to reach me yesterday however I was not available. After reading the comments on their page, I posted the following: This is a tragic situation that has been in existence for many years. Cat rescue organizations have approached City Council for years to ask for assistance to help these cats who are abandoned due to irresponsible people. I was on the Mayors committee and sadly the outcome is not what the cat rescue groups wanted. LCCR has been trapping, vetting and rehoming cats throughout this city for years as has PAW and Purrfect Endings. The more critical problem is that cats leave the Lethbridge Animal Shelter not vetted and the majority of people do not neuter and spay them resulting in more kittens and more abandonment. These cats are community cats, stray cats , shy cats and referred to as feral here with lack of compassion and caring overall for their well being. LCCR has never received one cent from the City and continues to fundraise to help abandoned cats. This year alone LCCR has trapped, vetted and rehomed over 400 community cats into safe environments and sanctuaries, with assistance and support from ANSTF, AARCS and Mattys Place Cat Sanctuary. Not one cent from the City other than community support through our fundraising efforts. All of our cat rescue organizations are very sad that these cats are referred to as diseased and that they will be SNAP tested and ultimately killed if they test positive for HIV or FeLeuk. HIV cats can live long and healthy lives when cared for. Feral cats live harsh and short lives as it is Overall, the City spends millions on capital projects and the amount of money they have proposed to allocate is a drop in the bucket, indicating again the lack of compassion overall for the sad situation. An even greater problem in Lethbridge and area is irresponsible pet ownership, people not neutering/spaying their cats and abandoning them.
