Globe-athon is an annual global movement to raise awareness about below the belt cancers, which was started last year 2013. This international movement is focused on the prevention and early detection of all gynecological cancers, including uterine (endometrial), cervical, ovarian, vaginal and vulvar. The movement to end womens cancers is supported by international gynecologists, gynecological oncologists and doctors, as well as gynecological cancer survivors. In its inaugural year in 2013, more than 60 countries and 130 cities hosted events to raise awareness and encourage participation in Globe-athon. The 2nd edition of the Globe-athon in East Asia and Asia Pacific is announced to happen on the 28th September 2014, Sunday. During its second annual effort, Globe-athon will occur during four weeks in September with hundreds of events and educational seminars throughout the world to raise awareness for, and ultimately increase, early detection and prevention of gynecological cancers. Below the belt cancers account for 19 percent of new cancer cases a year, according to International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) 2008 data. Dr. Mathias Sapuri, OL was identified as hosting coordinator for Papua New Guinea by the hosting committee of Globe-athon, Tamapa, Florida, U.S. Last year Pacific International Hospital initiated this effort to conduct Globe-athon in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea with the support of MRDC, Coca-Cola Amatil (PNG) Ltd, Supreme Industries. Being the first year and first of its kind of event in PNG, the turn out for the walk was quite good, more than 500 people from many corporate organizations, associations and the public turned for the walk. PNG media played a vital role in the promotion of the event, which made a great turnout to the event. This year for the second edition of the Globe-athon in PNG is hosted by Pacific International Hospital and supported by PNG Cancer Foundation. NCDC we are proud to convey to you that NCDC Health Division and Social Services Division is giving its full support. XV Pacific Games mascot TURA also has confirmed its presence to make the vent more colorful. Invites are also sent to most of the corporate and association in Port Moresby. This year event should create a mark in the whole of PNG community mind about the risk of women cancer and the importance of screening and vaccination. To achieve this common goal we request support from all corporate organization, association and NGO’s to support this event by joining us the event on the 28th September 2014, Sunday at 7.30am. We also seek volunteers who can bridge the gap between the need of the community with the organization willing to provide support and service. The latest statistics states more than 1800 women die from cancer every year in PNG, in the global scale more than 2.9 million women die every year of cancer. Early diagnosis is the best solution to prevent the spread of cancer. New to the effort this year, organizers are issuing the Globe-athon STEPtember Pledge, to provide a unifying action that anyone, regardless of country or language, can participate in to help raise awareness. The pledge, featured on globeathon, asks individuals to set a goal of taking 10,000 steps a day during September to bring attention to below the belt cancers. Beyond awareness, the pledge also provides an opportunity to increase physical activity and better health, as risk of a variety of gynecological cancers have been linked to obesity. In fact, the World Health Organization recommends 10,000 steps daily for better health. Venue : PIH Campus, 3 Mile, Taurama Road, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea Date & Time : 28th September 2014, Sunday at 07:30am The event would culminate with a media event, Invites are sent to His Excellency Grand Chief Sir Michael Ogio, PNG First Lady Ms. Lynda Babao – O’Neill, Minister for Health & HIV / AIDS Mr. Michael Malabag, NCD Governer Mr. Powes Parkop, BPNG Governor Mr Bakani Loi, Health Secretary Mr. Pascoe Kase, CEO PNG Cancer Foundation Mr Dadi Toka Jr and Chairman PNG Cancer Foundation Mr Gerea Aopi were invited as distinguished guest. We are looking forward for their confirmation in a day or two. With the warm reception the event had last year, we are very sure this year making a mark of 2000 people joining the Globe-athon 2014 in PNG would not be a bigger task. To achieve this and create a positive mark in the community, we seek your support to spread the importance of identifying cancer in its early stages is the only way to save our PNG women from this dreadful disease.
