Go Falcons! The East Central College volleyball team will take on the number one seed in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division II national tournament November 21. As the number 16 seed, the Falcons will face the Cowley College Tigers in a 1 p.m. match Thursday at Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio. The Falcons qualified for the national tournament by claiming the Region 16/District O championship November 2. This marks ECC’s fourth trip to nationals since volleyball was reinstated at East Central in 2007. The Falcons won the Region D-II championship five times in the past six years. In 2011, the team was the runner-up in the region/district. ECC won the region last year but lost to Northeastern Oklahoma and missed a chance to head to the national tournament. With a record of 20-25, the Falcons have a daunting task ahead as they look to avenge an early season loss to the Tigers when they traveled to Iowa to play in the Kirkwood Community College Tournament. During the regular season ECC played four other teams that are in the tournament. Coach Lisa Mathes Peters squad faced top 20 ranked NJCAA teams in 18 matches this season. If the Falcons upset Cowley County in the first match, they would play Thursday at 7:30 p.m. A loss in the first round would have them playing at noon on Friday, November 22. A send-off pep rally will be held Tuesday, November 19, at 10:20 a.m. in the ECC gym before the team boards the bus for the trip to Ohio.
