Go TX! WASHINGTON — The guest list for tonight’s Iftar dinner at the White House includes diplomats from across the Muslim world, a senator, five members of Congress — and the mayor of Paris, Texas, population 25,314. Mayor Arjumand Hashmi is a Pakistani-born cardiologist and friend of former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf, who often comes to visit him. As the New York Times put it in a profile a year ago, “He is like the opening line of a joke: `So a Texan, a Muslim, a Republican, a doctor and the mayor of Paris are sitting at a bar …’ Except that he is, by himself, all of the people in the joke.” The Iftar is the post-sundown meal that breaks the day’s fast for Muslims celebrating Ramadan. This was the fifth Iftar hosted by President Barack Obama. The guest list included Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., who is Muslim, and nearly four dozen diplomats, including ambassadors from Iraq, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Malaysia, Benin, Burkina Faso, Morocco, Jordan, Gambia, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Turkey and Egypt. (Hashmi’s native Pakistan was represented by its Charge d’Affaires, Asad Majeed Khan.)
