God is Love. Anyone who knows me knows my agnosticism and gestalt definition of god, but thats not my point. I am fascinated by this concept God is Love or Love is God. To love is to be godly. To bring bring the qualities of god or heaven to our world requires US to love. (I do like Jesus message of love, son of god or just some sandal-wearing politician). Thats a message that derives its value from the quality of human interaction, not a bestowment from some divine force, but from our own force. I just finished watching a documentary on Progeria (a childhood illness that prematurely ages people and ultimately causes their death at a young age). The mom/doctor says there is no god out there that would do this deliberately to a child. While I cant be certain what she was trying to conclude exactly, and Im in no rush to use this type of argument as proof or disproof of god. I just like to propose something is true to see the conclusions it gives us. If God is Love, and god loves all things and all people, then why would creating a child with Progeria be something god would never do? He would create that child with any variety of characteristics we may or may not love and he would love them. The idea that god wouldnt create a mutated, crippled kid (monster that should be drowned at birth) is a product of OUR difficulty seeing the value of those kids: our assumption that theyre a horror no god would create. But if God is Love then theyre not a horror and god loves them and wants them around. The lesson is to love that child. To love all things that dont fit our assumptive definition of heaven. If you believe in god, or you believe god is love, or love is some super force, then in the face of injustice, continue to love. Dont doubt the existence of good (or god) in this world. But expand your definition of what is beautiful and lovable. Not that these parents dont love their children. But they clearly see it as a curse or feel victimized about it. God willing that will never happen to me and Ill never have to have my words tested. But Im only human.
