God is Sovereign Jun 18, 2013 05:01 pm, by Chris Greer Read Romans 9:1-29 “But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, ‘Why have you made me like this?’ Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?” Romans 9:20-21 ESV Read these verses again, slowly, paying close attention to the emotions they engender. Paul often effectively reminds me that my focus is so frequently on myself, not on God. He does it again here in Romans 9. When I read this verse, my eyes, my mind, and my heart are drawn to the word “dishonorable.” The voice in my head cries out in worry, “What? How could God willingly make me – or anyone else – into a pot for dishonorable use? Does he really do that?” In my selfish desire for self-preservation, I miss the point Paul is making. This passage and these verses are about the Potter, not the pots. They are about God’s glorious sovereignty, not my ego-centric comparisons. God is sovereign. God created and sustains every atom and fiber in this universe, and His Word paints one clear picture of Him – He is good (Psalm 100:5, Mark 10:18), in him there is no darkness (1 John 1:5), and He is love and loves us so much that He sacrificed his Son so we can be reunited with Him (1 John 4:8-9). Isn’t this the kind of God you want to be in charge of all creation, and overseeing the shape of your pottery? Reflection: What emotions arise when you think about the sovereignty of God? Worship: Hillsong’s “Forever Reign” reminds us of God’s goodness, the reason we can let him reign in our lives. Turn it up loud and enjoy! m.youtube/#/watch?v=JRBQtIEEkrU&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DJRBQtIEEkrU By Chris Greer The post God is Sovereign appeared first on Trochia.
