God knows how to show up just when you need him. 27 years ago when Terrell was born with this heart defect I was stationed in Honolulu HI. A nurse in the nursery had noticed that when he cried, he would turn blue. They then told me that when babies are born, they have an opening in their heart called a patent ductus(PDA). This allows blood flow from the babies heart to their lungs for oxygen. After the baby is 3 days old it begins to close off and the blood flow starts flowing through the pulmonary artery. Well, because Terrells pulmonary artery didnt develop he neednt a shunt. So they put him on a medication that would keep his PDA (patent ductus) open so blood could flow from his heart to his lungs while they implanted the shunts. Both his 1st two shunts failed. But because he was on the medication his PDA stayed open. So they airvaced him to University of San Francisco to try for a 3rd time. He went through 3 shunts trying to repair his heart. On each shunt surgery the docs would tell me they needed to close off his PDA so that along with the shunts he wouldnt get to much blood flow to his lung. Each time they never closed it. On the 3rd shunt the docs said this was his only hope. It worked...Praise God! Still they couldnt close the PDA, so no doctors ever spoke of it again, because they said it would close on its on eventually. Today, I walked into Terrells room and his doctors were trying to figure out why he was having such difficulty breathing, but also, seeing on his CT scans and cath photos where his shunts and conduit all had become stenosis and no blood flow was getting through. I heard the fellow doctor telling the lead doctor...Hes shunting (getting blood flow) from somewhere, it must be his PDA. The lead doctor responded thats not possible, how could they (past doctors) miss closing that off., also, no scans nor the Cath showed the PDA... of course no doctors had been looking for that anyway. Immediatly I paused and was stunned hearing her mention that after all these years. What his PDA isnt closed? Now I dont know what this mean, but I do know it is once again helping Terrell the same way it did 27 years ago... It has to be GOD!!!
