Goethe, like Dante, was a man of complete genius, and we can measure the times in which we live based on how his works are held. Goethe was a novelist, a playwright, and he held government office, was appointed by the state to conduct diplomacy to foreign territories, and was a philosopher, a doctor, and a poet. It asks, how much higher, then, are his poems? As poetry is suppose to be, in many ways, the highest human endeavor. Dante was a linguist, a statesmen, and a poet, and was sentenced to exile. It use to be, in German theater, Goethe’s lines were delivered in epic tones, with poetic syntax. Now it is common for them to deliver Goethe’s lines in every day speech, like how we would talk in the corporate world, at least in theory. But many German actors much prefer to deliver the lines in the old and epic, but they cannot get work doing that anymore. It asks the question of us all, how are we, or any human beings, treated in this society?
