Going on a poultry rant... 1) If you happen to breed chickens to your specifications for your esthetics and freezer rather than SOP or resale you are classified as a hobby breeder. 2) If you breed/research/promote/mentor/connect and network with other like minded breeders in the hopes of improving the breed as a whole, show according to various SOP, and nurture a long-standing good reputation, you are considered a serious breeder. 3) The lines between these definitions are wide, blurred and often quite gray. 4) There is nothing more right or less wrong about either description and both are very much needed. 5) There are good and bad breeders in both of the above definitions; Good breeders follow proper breeding techniques, are concerned with the welfare and overall health of their flock, cull according to whatever is important to your particular standards, with an eye for developing a good reputation whether just from admiring neighbors and family, or from nationwide customers. While bad breeders sell inferior stock, both in health and conformation, the exact same as ideal. Do not have the breeds best interests at heart, will speak badly about other breeders to try to make themselves look better, and/or have issues with neighbors or authorities regarding how their birds are kept. 6) There are few shades of gray between good and bad. 7) The only breeders I do not have patience for are the bad ones, anyone that is trying to improve upon their birds, either from a beauty or utility standpoint, has my respect and admiration as due.
