Going out on a limb here, with regard to sentencing of our - TopicsExpress

Going out on a limb here, with regard to sentencing of our criminals. In some US states, the 3 strike rule applies. Once you have been convicted three times, regardless of the severity of the offense, you automatically go to jail, and it could be for a very long time. In light of what happened this weekend in St Albert, Im thinking we need to revamp our sentencing procedure. I know there will be a lot of harsh criticism, but here is my proposal. Once a criminal has been sentenced a number of times (3 or more) for a total of ten years or more, or any single sentence described as a life sentence, we institute a mandatory sentence of banishment to the northern tundra, well away from any civilization (at least 500 miles from the nearest settlement... which could mean on one of the islands in the far north.). In all fairness, the criminal will be given the opportunity to learn survival skills before he/she is dropped by helicopter in a very remote area. We could hire some of the best survival experts to provide one on one training for a full month. In addition, we would provide some excellent survival gear to the criminal. Nothing related to technology. Knife, axe, bow saw, good clothing, good boots, good tent and one flint striking tool to make fire. To give the repeat offender some hope of survival, his/her sentence would begin on June first. That would give him/her four months to practice survival skills before winter. I believe we could probably accomplish this training program and helicopter ride out to a remote area for a cost somewhere in the neighbourhood of $25,000 to $50,000. Rules of the game are simple. Make it out to the 60th parallel without aid, and locate a settlement, and you earn your freedom. If you should ever appear before a judge again, sentence is automatically banishment to the far north again, with no right to appeal. No training this time. You get a full set of survival gear and within one week, regardless of the time of year, you are set down in a different location than the first time. Think about it. I would love to hear your comments and criticisms.
