Immigration : Some Thoughts Immigration : U.S is a perfect example of Immigration driven population expansion. Imperialism played a major role in populating a whole new continent of Australia and New Zealand. The sea routes ensured creation of port of calls which in turn created a whole new trade network in the hinterland . Singapore, Hongkong are all creation of trade driven population expansion. Excluded territories like Macau,Hongkong also have a diversity in the population. Here it is because of the policy decisions of China. Immigration also counts internal immigration. In China millions of workers from interior territories travel and work in coastal provinces of Guandong, Shenzen, Shanghai,Pudong. This causes a wonderful phenomenon of massive human movement in the world, when workers leave to their home in national vacation enmasse As in India, there is a wave of immigrant labours from BIMARU ( Bihar, Madhya pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarpradesh) states and North east in search of jobs to wealthy states of PUnjab,Haryana and southern states. Labours from Rayalaseema, Orissa also emigrate to Bangalore and Chennai as construction labours. Mining towns, with unregulated mining also cause population explosion in a particular area leading to creation of shanty towns. Towns in U.S during time of gold rush is an example of the same. Even our Kolar gold mines is an example of mining induced population expansion bringing people from various places. Industrial clusters like SEZs in China is responsible for predominant emigration from rural areas . Urban sprawl, is characterized by people in cities moving away to suburban areas therein reducing the population density but it causes havoc to the land use patterns leading to rampant urbanization and reduction of effective usage of land . U.S cities and their suburban counterparts are an example. The freeway systems has actually fueled creation of faraway suburbs. One child policy will be playing a havoc in productivity of China as it would be losing the population sweet spot edge which made it competitive in manufacturing. The employable population determines the effectiveness of expanding economy in labour intensive industries and in demand driven consumption markets. The population sweet spot has helped many nations like South Korea, Taiwan, Japan in order to rapidly rampup economy. The falling birthrates are happening in Japan, Russia, Scandinavian countries which would cause a major change in social structure of the countries. This could lead to increased immigration for service industries there. Another type of land colonization is happening in Africa, with rich countries buying off lands in Africa, thereby rendering millions of Africans landless.This would create more slums in African cities. Land grab is a major issue in Africa and countries especially Arabian states like Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE, France are buying lands to produce grains and Biofuel crops. Even an Indian company called Karuturi based in Bangalore has leased million acres. Here MNCs and governments are joining hands which has resulted in this. This can have after effects in creation of armed struggle, illegal immigration to Africa through Mediterranean sea, creation of terror groups which would raise money through drug, gun running and sea piracy. The best part is India is fast approaching the population sweet spot, and with proper training of people this could be leveraged to expand at mind numbing pace. Senthil Ashokkumar
