Golden jubilee celebration The Statesman 26 Dec 2014 JU architecture Dept eyeing energy efficient projects statesman news service Kolkata, 25 December The department of architecture of Jadavpur University is planning to focus on more green buildings and energy efficient projects to celebrate its golden jubilee. The department, which was established in 1964 with an undergraduate programme in architecture under the guidance of Prof Amiya Kumar Banerjee with 15 students, is all set to celebrate its 50th year on 27 December. With time the department became instrumental in initiative several projects that showcase the department’s expertise and experience in the field. In the field of energy and environmental studies the department has increased its research activity to develop practical solutions to problems faced by industries and government departments. A source in the department said that the department was working on several projects, including renovation and restoration of the Writers Buildings. He said that 130 students and experts of the department were working on the projects and it was expected to be over within two months. Experts working on the project said that they see this as an honour to work on such a heritage building. All the faculty members have varied expertise and involved in development activities in energy and environment fields, said Dr Madhumita Roy, head of the department of architecture. The department is also instrumental in installing a 20 kwp solar power integrated into a structural bamboo building in JU campus and in establishing way-side motels, cyclone shelter projects, rural and urban haat projects all over the state. The department had also launched the online building plan sanction project for New Town Kolkata at Rajarhat as a part state governments e-governance programme. Above all we are trying to learn and teach that architecture does not necessarily mean brick, wood, concrete and mortar. It also means eco-friendly, nature centric and sustainable development making room for beauty art and creativity for all sectors in the society, said Dr Roy.
