Gomer Stanley Roberts, Corporal, 1st/4th Battalion The Cheshire Regiment. born 1897, Killed in Action 15th August 1915 aged 18 years. Son of Gomer and Jennie, 11 Alfred Road, Birkenhead. Brother of Jennie. Remembered with Honour, Helles Memorial. The 1st/4th Battalion (Territorial) was raised in Birkenhead and after training they sailed overseas assigned to 159th (Welsh) Brigade. On the 9th August 1915 they landed at Suvla Bay ,Gallipoli as reinforcements to beleaguered British and Anzac forces in order to make a break out from the beach head. However the Turkish troops under Mustafa Kapel had heavily reinforced and inflicted huge casualties on the combined forces. This lead to several months of trench warfare until a successful evacuation in December. The Helles Memorial serves the dual function of Commonwealth battle memorial for the whole Gallipoli campaign and place of commemoration for many of those Commonwealth servicemen who died there and have no known grave. The United Kingdom and Indian forces named on the memorial died in operations throughout the peninsula, the Australians at Helles. There are also panels for those who died or were buried at sea in Gallipoli waters. The memorial bears more than 21,000 names.
