Good Friday morning all! With Chicago in its 3rd consecutive month - TopicsExpress

Good Friday morning all! With Chicago in its 3rd consecutive month of below normal temps with a 0-deg or lower count of 15 days to date the 4th largest in 143 years of weather records and a Friday morning low which bottomed out at 6-below at both Midway and OHare-and as cold as 11-below at Romeoville, the fact Great Lake ice coverage is WAY UP isnt a great surprise. But the actual year over year increase in ice is stunning. My National Weather Service-Milwaukee colleagues report data out of Environment Canada indicates theres more than twice the ice on the Great Lake compared to a year ago and that ice coverage is running nearly 30% ahead of normal at this point in the cold season. These NASA MODIS satellite images out of CIMSS at the University of Wisconsin-Madison show the ice clearly. The U.S. Coast Guards waged quite a battle to keep traffic on the ice-clogged lakes and adjacent waters, like Michigans St. Marys River shown here, moving through work by icebreakers like the Mackinaw.
