Good Monday morning to our Facebook community, especially to those of you who recently started following our page. Welcome to a diverse collection of individuals, family members, treatment professionals and educators who are devoted to raising awareness about eating disorders, de-stigmatizing the illness and recovery process, sharing up-to-date science and research about EDs, and encouraging open discussion about positive #bodyimage, media literacy and self-acceptance. Each day we get MANY calls and emails from people near and far who are reaching out for the first time looking for help and are courageously taking a first step toward treatment. Individuals often feel equal parts overwhelmed and hopeful for some relief from the physical and emotional toll of an eating disorder. Understandably, they have a lot of questions. This week, our daily FB posts will take a look at some of the most common questions we receive about #eatingdisorders, treatment and #recovery. We start the week with three popular questions that often get asked together... Q: I’m concerned that I, or a loved one, might have an eating disorder. How can I know for sure? A: A formal evaluation by a licensed physician trained to treat eating disorders is the best way to diagnose an eating disorder, rule out other concerns and fully assess medical and nutritional needs. However, our online self-assessment can provide a starting point for understanding whether disordered eating behaviors are present and problematic. Early intervention for eating disorders can significantly impact positive outcomes in treatment so initial concerns should be addressed right away. You can get more personalized feedback by sending an email to [email protected] or calling (410) 938-5252. ~~~ Q: I want to get treatment for myself or a loved one. Where do I start? A: To start the admissions process simply contact one of our admissions coordinators at (410) 938-5252. Our staff would be happy to tell you about our programs, discuss insurance coverage, complete a private, over-the-phone assessment with you, set-up an initial appointment for outpatient therapy, or initiate the evaluation process if a higher level of care is necessary. You can find out more about the evaluation process at the link below. ~~~ Q: How do I know which level of treatment I need? A: Our programs exist along a continuum. Not everyone enters treatment through the same level of treatment and people’s treatment needs can fluctuate depending on the severity of their eating disorder and other personal factors. During the initial phone assessment with our admission coordinator, you can discuss your current symptoms, health status and additional concerns at which time our specially trained intake coordinators will give initial recommendations on which level of care may be the best fit for your needs. Based on this phone assessment they can schedule your admission into the appropriate program or they may schedule you for a “Level of Care Assessment” with one of our psychiatrists.
