Proprioception Proprioception is the body’s ability to sense the position of a joint in space. When an injury occurs, the communication system between the muscles, the joints and the nervous system is short-circuited. Inflammation, pain, nerve damage and even the body’s natural protective reflexes can all have a negative effect on this essential system. This creates dysfunction and weak links within the athlete’s kinetic chain. Restoring this communication and eliminating weak links is a crucial step in the rehabilitation process in order to achieve full recovery and prevent future injuries. It is also a pivotal part of any foundational phase of training. Proprioception is fundamental to Performance Balance training as it allows the body to maintain stability and orientation in space during static and dynamic activities.
