Good Morning FB friends...it is Saturday morning and a busy weekend in our area. :Last night Moorefield High School played Petersburg High School and MHS beat its traditional rival 58-20 after having lost last Friday to East Hardy High School. Congratulations ......to MHS on the win. Dont forget the Turkey Festival is going on at Mathias and there are lots of activities and good food. I hear there is a craft show going on along Rt 55 just outside of Moorefield across from the Catholic Church and of course WV plays Oklahoma State at 3:30 pm and its on ESPN. WV is ranked in the Top 25 and Oklahoma State was embarrassed last weekend by it loss to TCU while WV upset Baylor who was then ranked number 4. Oklahoma States starting quarterback got injured in the second game of the season and is out for the season and thus the second string quarterback has taken over and he only has a fifty percent completion rate in his passing, but they have a dangerous player is Hill who has speed and moves much like our own Alford. OSU was ranked in the Top 20 and they will be no push over and WV must be ready and play well in all phases of the game today. I think WV is on a roll and has confidence and is getting better both on offense and defense and WV will win the game today by two touchdowns. Tomorrow the Hardy County Historical Society has its annual meeting at the Library on Sunday at 2:00 pm and we will have a reenactor to perform playing the role of Belle Boyd who was a Confederate spy and lived in Martinsburg and worked in Front Royal, Virginia. It is fascinating true story and tells a role of a brave woman back in the Civil War days. The meeting is open to the public and there is no charge and light refreshments will be served. Please come join us. There are more changes coming to Moorefield. My sister Ada Kay Cleavers house sold on Monday. She owned my grandfather, M. A. Beans home which is across the street from the Moorefield Examiner and between Hardy Phone and Nationwide buildings. The Hardy Phone company purchased her house and they plan to use the house for office space and the back yard will become a parking lot. Cindy Hinkle owns the old Arno Friddle house which she uses for her Nationwide Insurance office and she has purchased the old Sheetz building located at the corner of Main Street and Spring Ave. and she is moving her Nationwide Insurance office there, and I see a For Sale sign up and thus the old Friddle house must be for sale. It is a beautiful victorian house with lots of oak woodwork. I hope it finds a good owner. Finally things are moving forward again on the Mullin Hotel. The Hardy County Historical Society received a large grant and will begin work on the Hardy County Museum. The Museum has been revised and will be on half of the second floor. On the other side there will be office space on at least part of the other side. The Hardy County Convention and Visitor Center CVB is moving its office from the old Bishoff building to the second floor of the Mullin Hotel. The elevator will be ordered and installed soon. The owners of the Mullin Hotel are meeting with some established restaurant owners to work towards putting a restaurant in the lower floor of the Mullin Hotel and work is starting to take place on the third and fourth floors. Soon plaster will be put in place on the old log structure located behind the hotel. It will be used as a specialty shop. The Hardy County Rural Development Authority RDA owns the parking lot across the street and they have contracted to have the parking finished with pavers which will be either brick in finish or charcoal. I vote for brick because it fits the scheme of the downtown area. The lot will be finished by the end of November so that it does not interfere with the Community Christmas Tree event scheduled for December 6 with the parade starting at 4:00 pm and the ceremony at 5:00 pm and the lighting at 6:00 pm and the Christmas party at 6:30 pm and Christmas magic show at McCoy theatre at 7:30 pm. The Duffey Methodist Church is working on a million plus dollar Youth Center and it is now under roof and the plan is to have a large parking lot below it. The Snider house has almost been completely torn down and the Carriage House will remain. There used to be an amusement park on the lot where the Snider house was located. And, of course the McMechen House has reopened and the new owners have become a nice addition to our town with the bakery and breakfast they serve and the use of the facility for major events in our community. We talked about all of this last year and now we are seeing all phases coming together for our community. The downtown area is being revived but there is more we can do, and I am excited about the possiblilities and look forward to the new Moorefield High School opening in the near future. I hope that the board of education is able to purchase the old Sherman property that is for sale. It would be nice to see the high school extend to the end of the street.
