Good Morning, Humid air remains in place across much of the eastern U.S. early this morning… And, the back door cool front we’ve been talking about the past couple of days was pushing through southeastern New York shortly after midnight… We’ll obviously be looking at this boundary as a key ‘focal point’ for much of today’s shower activity, and the front by 7 a.m. will probably be draped over southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey… Most of the drenching downpours that occurred yesterday were confined to Virginia, Maryland and southeastern Pennsylvania… And today, as warm and moist air gets “squeezed” by this front, or it undergoes additional lifting, we tend to think that the heaviest pockets of rain will occur in some of the same places that were hit yesterday… Farther to the north and east, the Greater New York City Metro Area, as well as southern New England, northern New Jersey and northeastern Pennsylvania will be in a cooler and more stable environment… That’s not meant to imply there won’t be any rain at all in these places, but the greater potential for thunder, lightning, strong wind gusts and rain heavy enough to cause flooding will be in the warmer regime… One of the other things we’ll need to address in the short term is patchy fog this morning, some of which could be dense, especially in places that saw some heavy rainfall yesterday… Muggy air will be a mainstay for the next couple of days, but should get wiped out just in time for the upcoming weekend… Also, the back door front will manage to stall tonight and then it will begin reverse its course tomorrow… As a warm front on Thursday, it once again will be a catalyst for a couple of showers and perhaps a thunderstorm or two… Temperatures today will be lower, as a general rule of thumb, because east and northeasterly surface winds usher in cooler air from the ocean… Tomorrow, we expect much of the Northeast to remain in the cooler air, while parts of the mid-Atlantic states start to warm up a bit… The end of the workweek will bring times of clouds and sunshine to the coastal plain, and then the showers and thunderstorms which will be erupting during the day will probably be more widespread and heavier than anything most will be seeing over the next two days… The culprit this time around will be a cold front that will be pressing in from the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley, and it should reach the East Coast by early on Friday night… While the rain that occurs in the region on Friday may be heavy enough to cause some flooding of streets, highways and in areas of poor drainage, the ‘good news’ is that the global models are all in agreement that this front which will be approaching should be moving offshore by early Saturday morning… Therefore, we feel more confident now that we can go ahead and remove the mention of a shower from Saturday morning’s forecast, and play up the idea that it will be turning out mostly sunny… Saturday’s temperatures will be mostly in the upper 70s and the lower 80s… Sunday, Father’s Day, will be less humid for most with sunshine for the most part… Have a good day!
