Good Morning! It is the first day of the fall semester and I wish - TopicsExpress

Good Morning! It is the first day of the fall semester and I wish all of you the very best experience this fall. I want to share with you just a thought or two about the dress and grooming standards. Some of you have been here and know the standards well. Others have come to BYU-Idaho for the first time. For those of you who are new I thought it might be helpful to give you a little reminder of the doctrinal and spiritual foundations of the dress and grooming standards. I do so in a spirit of love. I love you very much and I want for you all the amazing blessings God has prepared for you. Today, I will address the standard about shorts and flip flops. Here is what I said last January in my devotional talk, entitled " Following Christ: Living the Spirit of the Honor Code." (By the way, I encourage all of you to take a moment and read it; it is on our web site.): The most frequent question I get about the Honor Code at BYU-Idaho is our standard on shorts and flip-flops. We ask you not to wear shorts or capris on campus, including when you are walking to and from the Hart Building or the fields to work out. The same thing is true of flip-flops. They may be appropriate in other places, but not on campus. The purpose of this standard is to help you qualify for extra spiritual help in developing a reverence for sacred things. The learning and teaching that take place on this dedicated campus are sacred experiences. When you live this standard, you make a small sacrifice that shows the Lord your additional respect for what happens in this special and set-apart place. This is a small thing, but the Lord has taught us that “out of small things proceedeth that which is great.” Your obedience in this small thing demonstrates your desire for increased spiritual blessings of sensitivity to and reverence for sacred places and sacred things. I invite you to live this standard in that spirit. Sue and I pray for you every day. We know the Lord loves you and watches over you. We look forward to seeing you on campus.
